Zelensky Calls on European Leaders to Join Trump Talks

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky has called on European leaders to participate in his upcoming meeting with US President Donald Trump to address the ongoing war with Russia.

Washington has drafted a 28-point peace plan, which was revised following discussions with Ukrainian officials in Geneva over the weekend. Moscow has stated it has not yet received the proposal through official channels.

“I am ready to meet with President Trump – there are sensitive points to discuss, we still have them – and we believe that the presence of European leaders could be helpful,” Zelensky said Tuesday in an address to EU leaders, according to a video released by his office.

When Zelensky met Trump in August, shortly after the US president’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, he was joined by seven Western officials, including NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the leaders of Finland, France, Germany, Italy, and the UK.

A leaked version of the initial US proposal appeared to demand that Kyiv abandon several long-standing “red lines,” including its NATO membership bid and territorial claims against Russia. Ukrainian officials said they successfully persuaded Washington to make substantial revisions to the document.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that if the updated draft strays from what Moscow views as the original “spirit of Anchorage,” the situation will become “radically different.”

Zelensky is also facing domestic political pressure following a corruption scandal involving his long-time associate Timur Mindich, who was charged by Western-backed anti-graft investigators with orchestrating a major kickback scheme.

Surveillance conducted by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine reportedly captured conversations involving Zelensky and his chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, potentially implicating both, according to media reports.
